My jaw dropped when I saw this. I mean really. Kroger has decided to end doubling/tripling in the Houston area on April 13th.
Does this mean Dallas, too?
Currently, no. But it does make me a little queasy to know that we are pretty close to the Houston area, and who knows if that means it will spread.
Now, I’m not all familiar with the rest of the stores Houston has, but I will say if this happens in the Dallas metroplex, Kroger would have no chance in getting my business. Albertsons and Tom Thumb will still be doubling/tripling coupons, which would make it a very tough competition for Kroger. Also with Walmart doing price matching, overage, and competitor’s coupons, they have a very high chance of picking up lots of Kroger’s business.
Why would they pull this?
Here is the reasoning behind pulling the doubling/tripling:
- Kroger data shows that only 7% of households take advantage of doubling and tripling.
- Only 1% use more than 10 coupons in a transaction.
- With the growing popularity of digital coupons, mobile apps and manufacturers producing coupons valued at more than 50 cents, Kroger feel’s it’s an ideal time to test out a new money-saving program and discontinue double/triple. There’s a possibility they may re-introduce double/triple by hosting special shopping events intermittently.
- Kroger will still continue to accept coupons at face value. Part of the new policy states there is a limit of one electronic or paper manufacturer coupon per item. The opportunity to stack is no longer available. A digital coupon and manufacturer paper coupon may not be combined on the purchase of a single item. More than 130 digital coupons are available daily at www.kroger.com.
On a side note, isn’t it astonishing that only 7% of consumers at Kroger are using any coupons, and only 1% are using more than 10?!
You can visit Kroger on their Facebook page and let them know what you think of this decision. And please…PLEASE if you say anything, don’t be rude about it. I have a pet peeve with people being flat out rude on companies Facebook pages.
If you are unsure (or in denial) if this will be affecting you, you will be receiving a letter in the mail from Kroger next week letting you know everything listed above.
(BIG thanks to my buddy Tiffany at My Litter for all of the info)
What’s you take on this? Does it make sense to you or not?

Hey! I'm Jasmine.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
If others don’t care to save money WE do! What’s the trouble on them just keeping it as it is? I am also in DFW so if that ‘trend’ makes its way over here they won’t see me as much. That eliminates the possibility of getting frees when the item is $1 and we have 0.5 and 0.35 coupons. Let’s just hope it’s different here… On a better note I came back from there a few hours ago with 9 items and only paid for 1 (cabbage). I got 4 1lb boxes of purina one beyond cat food (used 2 free coupons and 2 $3 off – they had to adjust them down as they are priced 2.99)), friskies cat food and delmonte diced tomatoes (won both from playing the online game), 14oz bag of kettle chips and bottle of motts apple juice (had free coupons for both from trading enfagrow checks with someone)… no coupon for cabbage!
Thanks for all your work Jasmine!
Way to go Cris!
Yes, I would get if Kroger said something like, “we can’t keep up with the growing rate of people using coupons. It was 7% and now it’s 35%” or something like that, but I find it odd they would want to eliminate it when the numbers are so low…
